THE WET/DRY PROGRAM:

WHAT IS THE WET/DRY PROGRAM?

The Wet/Dry program is an easy way to do your part for the environment by recycling and composting at home or work.  The program involves separating your wet and dry waste, using blue transparent and green transparent bags.  Once you have sorted your waste using the proper bags, you can place it at the curb on your collection day.  It will be picked up in a split truck, or two separate trucks.  Your waste is then transported to Westmorland-Albert for processing at our wet and dry facilities.

WHY IS THE PROGRAM IMPORTANT?

-      It is an easy way for you to improve and protect our environment by saving precious landfill space and other resources.  Diverting recyclable material from the landfill also reduces the amount of remnants released into the environment.

-      The Wet/Dry Program has provided more than 70 jobs for the local economy.

-      Because we recover and send over 30 different items to recycling markets; our tipping fee is one of the lowest in Canada.

-      We are able to give back to the community through donations and sponsorships.

WHAT IS DRY WASTE?

Dry waste includes all items that are not considered wet or soiled items.  This includes both recyclable and non-recyclable materials.

Dry waste includes such items as bottles, cans, clothing, plastic, wood, glass, metals and paper.  If any containers or bags have any residue, we would appreciate a quick rinse or shake before disposing of them in your dry bag.  How do you remember to use the blue transparent bag?  Think recycling.  Blue is the international colour for recycling.

Once the dry waste reaches our facility at Westmorland-Albert, all recoverable materials are removed and sent to different markets.  We are the first area in the Maritimes to recycle such items as milk cartons, Tim Horton’s cups, rechargeable batteries, cellular phones, and even sneakers!

WHAT IS WET WASTE?

Wet waste includes all food and yard waste, and anything that would contaminate your recyclables.

Items which are considered wet include meat and bones, food and food scraps, soiled paper towels and tissues, diapers, kitty litter and sanitary products.  Wet waste should be placed in a green transparent bag.  How do you remember to use the green transparent bag?  Think about nature.  Once the wet waste is processed, and non-compostable materials are removed, we produce rich compost, prefect for gardens and lawns.

It is important to never put glass in your wet waste!

SOME ITEMS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE IN REGULAR PICK-UP

For safety and environmental reasons, Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) should not be included in your regular waste.  These items can cause fires, harm those people who come into contact with them, damage machinery or harm our environment.

Some examples of HHW include household cleaners, paint, oils, antifreeze, batteries, propane tanks and aerosol cans which are not empty.  HHW can instead be taken to our HHW Depot located at our Berry Mills Waste Management Facility free of charge.

You can also take advantage of our mobile units during hazardous waste cleanup in the spring and fall.  A schedule of locations is advertised before each occasion.
